Brushed Metal Collection

Owl

One tapered metal body, three ways to shape the light.

The Owl is a family of three cordless table lamps built on one tapered metal body. Each shares the same flared silhouette and the same choice of three finishes, brushed stainless steel, brushed lacquered brass and brushed lacquered copper, but each carries a different head. A solid dome, an opal diffuser, or a ribbed cone, so you can choose downlight, side light or ambient glow while keeping one consistent look across a room.

The Owl is offered in three variants on the same body. The Owl 1 is a glare-free downlight, the Owl 2 a soft side and downlight, and the Owl 3 an ambient omnidirectional glow.

The Design Story

One family, designed around the light

The Owl was designed by Peter Ellis with Gabriel Tam and Tammy Chiew in 2006, around a simple idea: keep one body and one silhouette, and change the way the light behaves at the top. The result is a family of three, each built on the same tapered metal form and offered in the same three finishes, so a venue can specify a single consistent look and still light different spaces in different ways.

The Owl 1 carries a solid dome reflector that throws a focused, glare-free downlight onto the table. Because it releases almost no upward light, it is the one to reach for beside glass, where reflections in a window would otherwise break the view. The design was recognised with a Red Dot Design Award in 2008. The Owl 2 replaces the dome with a cylindrical opal diffuser and top plate, softening the output into a gentle side and downlight. The Owl 3 fits an internally ribbed conical diffuser for a soft, omnidirectional ambient glow.

You will find the Owl in service from Silks at Crown Metropol Perth to MARK in Singapore and the Buhais Geology Park Interpretive Centre in Sharjah.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Brushed steel, brass and copper

Every Owl body is machined from metal and finished by hand in one of three ways. The brushed stainless steel is cool and neutral, the brushed lacquered brass is warm and golden, and the brushed lacquered copper is the most characterful of the three, a rich rose-toned metal that catches candlelight and warms as the evening goes on. The brass and copper are lacquered to hold their colour through nightly service rather than developing a patina.

What changes between the three variants is the head. The Owl 1 caps the body with a solid metal dome that reflects the light straight down. The Owl 2 sits a cylindrical opal glass diffuser above a top plate to spread a soft side and downlight. The Owl 3 fits a conical diffuser, ribbed on the inside to scatter the light into an even, glare-free glow. All three are rated to IP64, weigh from around 330g, and run on the fully serviceable and replaceable N1 Light Engine.
