The Original NEOZ Cordless Lamp

Magill

The first NEOZ cordless lamp, designed in 1995 for the Penfolds Magill Estate restaurant.

The Magill is NEOZ's first cordless lamp, designed by Peter Ellis in 1995 for the Penfolds Magill Estate restaurant in Adelaide. Thirty years on, it is still built in the same form: a brushed stainless steel base and top, a clear acrylic cylinder, and an internal stainless cone that reflects the warm LED into a soft, even glow.

One lamp, unchanged since 1995

The Magill is offered in a single form and a single finish: brushed stainless steel, with a clear acrylic cylinder and an internal stainless cone. The same lamp it has always been.

The Design Story

Designed in 1995, still in service thirty years on

The Magill is where NEOZ began. Peter Ellis designed it in 1995 for a single room: the Penfolds Magill Estate restaurant in Adelaide, an Allen Jack + Cottier interior that was the first of its kind in the city. The brief was a cordless lamp for the table, drawn around the postmodern architectural language of the building it was made for. A clear acrylic cylinder, a brushed stainless steel base and top, and an internal cone that reflects the warm LED back through the column. Nothing hidden, nothing decorative. The mechanism is the design.

Thirty years on, the Magill is still built in the same form, and still earns its place. It went from the Magill Estate to Rockpool Bar and Grill Melbourne in 2006, when Vanessa Crichton, then opening the room with Neil Perry, brought it in to replace a bespoke lamp that kept breaking. "An individual light on the table brings such a unique glow and is seamless in its presentation," she has said of the lamp. You will also find it on tables at the Kerry Hotel in Hong Kong, and at hospitality venues around the world.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Stainless steel and clear acrylic, built to be seen

Most lamps hide their workings. The Magill shows them. The outer cylinder is machined from clear acrylic, transparent enough to read the internal cone and the warm LED through the column, which is exactly the point. The cone itself is stainless steel, polished to reflect the light back into a soft, even glow without a visible hot spot. The base and top cap are brushed stainless steel, machined to the same tolerances now as they were in 1995. The finish has stayed the same as well: brushed stainless, as it has always been.

The Magill is rated to IP52 for terraces and indoor-outdoor settings, and is built around the N1 Light Engine. As with every NEOZ lamp, all parts are user-replaceable.
