Design Notes: The Making of the Piccolo Lamp

Design Notes: The Making of the Piccolo Lamp

The Piccolo is a petite cordless lamp with a large purpose: to do more with less. The product began as a challenge in scale. NEOZ set out to design a shorter, more compact lamp for venues that needed something discreet yet distinctive—one that would not dominate a table, but still bring presence and character. The name comes from the piccolo latte, a small but strong coffee popular in Australian cafés—short in stature, full of intention. And it’s a nice example of how to do more with less.

Compact Without Compromise: Small Cordless Lamp, Big Impact on the Table

Compact Without Compromise: Small Cordless Lamp, Big Impact on the Table The team aimed to balance playful energy with contemporary polish. The result is a minimalist lamp defined by its confident proportions—a short, conical base in brushed stainless steel paired with a vertically fluted polycarbonate diffuser. These soft vertical lines temper the illumination and bring a crisp, modern silhouette to the table. Offered in three neutral colourways, Piccolo complements the mood of casual fine dining—where atmosphere and ease go hand in hand.

Designed to Last: Ready for Your Daily Grind

While it may be small, Piccolo is built to endure. With an IP64 rating, it is equally at home on a breezy terrace as it is in a bustling dining room. Durability was essential, but so was ambience: like all NEOZ lamps, it delivers warm, flattering light designed to support the experience—not steal from it. That balance of performance and quiet confidence makes it a natural fit for modern hospitality spaces.

Sustainable Design: Recycled Plastic, Fewer Parts, Longer Lifespan

The Piccolo project also marked an evolution in how NEOZ approaches sustainability. The lamp’s light diffuser is made using 75% post-consumer recycled plastic, and its overall construction uses 20% fewer components than previous models. This is not just aesthetic reduction—it is practical. With no glue, no proprietary lock-ins, and a fully modular design, users can easily replace key parts like the battery, lamp body, or light source without special tools. Longer life, less waste. Every detail of the Piccolo reflects a considered design approach: one that favours longevity, adaptability, and pared-back elegance. Thinking big to keep things small.
