Design Notes: The Making of the Albert Cordless Lamp

Jan 08, 2026Gabriel Tam

The Albert cordless table lamp was designed with the intention of seeing frequent, professional use in sophisticated settings. Created for life in hospitality environments, Albert is an object to be handled, moved, relied upon, and always comfortable in its surroundings.

Its height and stable footprint are defining physical qualities. The proportions feel weighty and grounded, giving the lamp a low, composed stance that sits confidently on tables and counters.

Taken together, Albert reads as solid and composed, with an understated presence, relying on form and proportion rather than ornamentation. This gives the lamp a sense of permanence that stays consistent across different spaces.

Cordless Table Lighting Designed for Life in Hospitality

The base of Albert is engineered with durability and restraint in mind, using a time-honoured hot forging process to create a component with superior strength, corrosion resistance, and longevity suited to regular handling in hospitality environments. Forged from a single ingot of raw brass, the base is then CNC machined and polished to achieve a rich yet understated finish designed to sit quietly within an interior rather than assert itself as a decorative focal point. Albert is available in a classic lacquered brass for a long-lasting, deep lustre, or in Aged Brass, a proprietary rapid-aging process that produces an authentic living surface intended to continue evolving.

The Albert uses a high-CRI LED engine to deliver warm, consistent illumination. Light is shaped by a handmade lampshade that provides direct downlight alongside softer, diffused sidelight, creating a controlled and balanced output suited to both functional and ambient use. Internally, like all NEOZ products, the lamp is constructed with modularity in mind. Components, including the battery, LED, and switch, are replaceable, allowing the lamp to be maintained over time rather than treated as a sealed unit. This approach supports ongoing use through servicing rather than replacement.
